The Votes Are In: Meet Xochi, The Florida Aquarium’s New Axolotl Ambassador

After thousands of community votes, The Florida Aquarium is proud to announce the winning name of its newest costumed character: Xochi (pronounced so-chee)!

The pink axolotl, inspired by the endangered species, now has a name that celebrates her cultural roots and vibrant personality. Xochi is short for Xochimilco (pronounced so-chee-meal-koh), one of the last remaining natural habitats for wild axolotls in Mexico City. Derived from the Aztec word meaning “flower,” the name reflects creativity, renewal, and beauty. It’s a perfect fit for a character created to connect guests with science, storytelling, and the importance of protecting vulnerable species.

More than just fun and photo opportunities, Xochi represents a deeper mission. Axolotls’ remarkable ability to regenerate limbs and organs has made them invaluable to scientific research, yet their numbers in the wild continue to decline due to habitat loss and invasive species.

“We created Xochi as a fun, approachable way to spark curiosity and shine a light on one of the most fascinating and threatened species in the world,” said Tony Rokita, senior vice president of community engagement & social responsibility at The Florida Aquarium. “Her name honors cultural heritage while helping us tell a powerful conservation story.”

The final name was chosen from a list curated by a local Hispanic advisory committee and voted on by the public. Other finalists included Toci (pronounced toe-see) and Izel (pronounced ee-sel), each with deep ties to Aztec language and meaning.

Xochi joins the Aquarium’s family of beloved costumed characters alongside Tango the loggerhead sea turtle and Rocky the African penguin. Guests can meet her now during regular visits to The Florida Aquarium, where she is already making appearances, sharing high-fives, and celebrating culture, conservation, and curiosity.
