Public Relations Internship

Position Summary
The Florida Aquarium Public Relations internship offers a well-rounded, educational experience working with our Public Relations Manager. In this role, you will learn important skills and be exposed to a variety of efforts needed to successfully increase earned media awareness and affinity for The Florida Aquarium. Plus, you will work in the unique environment of a mission-driven, non-profit organization that is one of Tampa’s top attractions.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development and execution of The Florida Aquarium’s earned media strategy from conceptualization to implementation.
  • Work closely with the Public Relations Manager to implement initiatives that contribute to the enhancement of the organization’s public image.
  • Actively participate in collaborative sessions to brainstorm, plan, and execute effective public relations strategies that align with business objectives through earned media.
  • Assist in research efforts and provide comprehensive reports to guide decision-making and strategy refinement.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to understand business needs and ensure that public relations strategies align with broader organizational goals.
  • Represent The Florida Aquarium professionally during events, fostering positive relationships with attendees.
  • Provide administrative support to the Public Relations Manager as needed.

Qualifications

  • Must be a college sophomore or higher OR up to 6 months post graduate with preference to candidates with a GPA of 3.0/4.0.
  • Degree focused on public relations, communications, or journalism is ideal.
  • General knowledge of marketing, communications, public relations and/or general administrative responsibilities preferred.
  • Must be able to work in both a group and individual environment within a professional setting.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly organized; ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks.Experience using MS Office Suite particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint is required.

Learning Objectives

  • Intern will learn how to work in the public relations field for a non-profit organization and conservation-based attraction.
  • Intern will learn the role of public relations as earned media in the business communications model with regard to the overarching marketing framework.
  • Intern will learn how to brainstorm, write, distribute and track earned media tactics success in lockstep with master campaign

Time Commitment

  • Minimum 16 hours per week. Up to 24 hours per week
  • Workdays are primarily Monday–Friday from 9 AM–5 PM. Days and hours are flexible.
  • Some weekend or extended hours may be required for special events.
