Tide Talk: Lessons Learned from Exploring the Deep

Join The Florida Aquarium on April 25 at 5:45pm for Lessons Learned from Exploring the Deep, a cephalopod-centered Tide Talk with Dr. Heather Judkins, marine biologist and Associate Professor in Integrative Biology at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. Listen as Dr. Judkins recounts the story of a 2019 Gulf of Mexico cruise that led to “giant” findings and ultimately New York Times breaking news! Guests to this installment of Evening Tide Talks will also learn about unique cephalopod adaptations.

Dr. Heather Judkins with microscopeDr. Judkins has been working with cephalopods – squid, octopuses and their relatives – since they first captured her attention in 2003. She has been to sea numerous times for research initiatives and cephalopod-related projects. Dr. Judkins serves as a co-principal investigator with the DEEPEND Consortium, a deep-sea exploration program of the midwater column from the surface to 1,500 meters deep in the Gulf of Mexico.

With an undergraduate degree in Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island, Dr. Judkins received a master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University and a doctorate from the University of South Florida.
