Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Internship

Position Summary

The Specialized Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center (STRC) Husbandry Internship offers hands-on experience at The Florida Aquarium’s Apollo Beach Campus. Interns support animal care professionals in sea turtle rehabilitation, gaining skills in husbandry, commissary work, water quality testing, and life support system maintenance. This internship also includes technical training and professional development.

The STRC Husbandry Internship is a specialized internship that does not follow traditional academic terms. Applications open June 1 for the following terms:

Learning Objectives

Develop foundational skills in sea turtle husbandry
Interns will gain hands-on experience in daily husbandry practices, including diet preparation, feeding techniques, water quality testing, habitat cleaning, support of life support systems, and turtle holding areas, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of basic animal care.

Develop professional skills through teamwork, critical thinking, and accountability
Interns will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, practice problem-solving in real world settings, and demonstrate professionalism through effective communication, time management, and reliability.

Develop emotional intelligence in a professional setting
Interns will build self-awareness, empathy, and interpersonal skills to effectively navigate teamwork, communication, and guest interactions within a rehabilitation and conservation environment.

Understand the role of government agencies and policies in marine turtle conservation
Interns will learn about the federal, state, and local regulations that protect marine turtles, as well as the roles of agencies such as FWC, NOAA, and USFWS in permitting, rehabilitation, and conservation efforts.
