Water Quality Technician Internship
The Florida Aquarium’s Water Quality internship offers a well-rounded educational experience working with our team of professionals. Supporting the Water Quality team, the primary role of the intern is to assist with monitoring and maintaining the water quality in various marine habitats. This is a lab-based role that does not include interaction with the animals that live in marine habitats.
Interns will learn how to:
- Test water parameters like pH, salinity, and the nitrogen cycle.
- Measure and prepare doses of chemicals for water treatment.
- Maintain a clean and organized lab environment.
This internship provides a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in water quality management within an AZA-accredited aquarium.
Learning Skills:
- Develop strong lab skills and technical understanding
- Comprehend the nitrogen cycle in aquatic systems
- Monitor and maintain awareness of key water quality parameters
Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
- Assist technicians with daily water testing and equipment maintenance
- Calculate and measure chemical additions for water treatment
- Input data into a data management system
- Track and report on habitat disinfection procedures
- Perform upkeep and maintenance of the bio-garden
Qualifications:
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs
- Ability to stand/walk for 3+ hours at a time
- Self-motivated
- Detail-oriented with the ability to work independently
Time Commitment:
- 16-24 hours per week
- Days of the week will be determined based on scheduling needs
This internship is unpaid and complies with the Fair Labor Standards Act. Interns must make their own accommodation and transportation arrangements.
Please Note: Travel will be required to the various Aquarium locations.
