Meet Ginger and Juniper: The Florida Aquarium’s New Ambassador Skunks Debut During All-American Weekend

TAMPA, FL – Just in time for Independence Day weekend, The Florida Aquarium is introducing its newest animal ambassadors: Ginger and Juniper, two curious striped skunk sisters making their debut during the Aquarium’s “Sea to Shining Sea” All-American Weekend celebration July 3–5.
These sisters bring their skunk smarts and playful personalities to the Aquarium’s animal ambassador program, helping educators teach visitors about one of North America’s most misunderstood native wildlife species.
As part of the holiday celebration, Ginger and Juniper recently received patriotic-themed American flag-shaped treats made with frozen blueberries, pears, and red apples. The enrichment is designed to encourage their natural foraging behaviors and provide mental stimulation.

Fun Facts About Ginger & Juniper
🦨 Meet the sisters: Ginger and Juniper are striped skunk sisters born on September 16, 2025.
🦨 New to Tampa: They joined The Florida Aquarium from Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs.
🦨 Nature’s pest control: Skunks are opportunistic omnivores that can eat thousands of insects, helping support healthy ecosystems.
🦨 Strong swimmers: While they spend most of their time on land, skunks are surprisingly capable swimmers.
🦨 Widespread wildlife: Striped skunks are found across most of North America, including the U.S. (except Alaska and Hawaii), Canada and northern Mexico.
🦨 More than their reputation: Skunks are intelligent, curious animals that use their signature spray only as a last defense.
🦨 Ambassador animals: Ginger and Juniper’s scent glands have been removed, allowing them to safely participate in educational programming and animal encounters.
The skunks will also make appearances throughout the Aquarium during the “Sea to Shining Sea“ celebration, July 3–5, along with patriotic divers, special animal encounters, family entertainment, and a chance to leave a conservation legacy in honor of America’s 250th anniversary.
Guests who purchase tickets at the Aquarium ticket window July 3–5 after 2:50 p.m. will receive 25% off admission.
