Husbandry Internships

Husbandry Fish and Invertebrates InternSHIP

The Florida Aquarium Husbandry internships offer a well-rounded, educational experience working with our Fish & Invertebrates team in our Biological Operations department.

Specialized internships are designed to provide valuable hands on experience in the care of specific animals and habitats at an AZA accredited, world class facility.

This internship is working with aquatic animals on the Fish and Invertebrate team. A percentage of this Internship will involve learning fish, invertebrate and elasmobranch care along with elasmobranch and fish training techniques.

 Other tasks may include:

  • Assisting biologist with day to day duties and projects
  • Keeping habitats and back areas clean
  • Feed and diet prep
  • Participating in talking to our guests along the exhibit path about our    animal collection 

This intern will complete and present a project comparing coral growth on Acropora cervicornis fragments exposed to different flow rates and suspension versus a fixed positioning. The Intern will also learn to assist with 2 to 3 stations for the 4.09 Elasmobranch Training Team. This will also include learning how to engage guests and answer any questions about how and why we teach our animals to go to different stations to feed.

Qualifications

  • Must be college sophomore or higher and up to 6 months post graduate with a GPA of 2.5/4.0.
  • Must be available to fulfill the requirement of 32 hours per week for the 10 week period.
  • Communication skills are essential
  • Willingness to assist in physical labor on a daily basis

Spring and Fall Internships are 14 weeks in duration with a minimum of 16 hours per week requirement. Summer Internships are 10 weeks in duration with a minimum of 32 hours per week requirement. At least 1 project must be completed. 


Husbandry Water Quality Internship

The Florida Aquarium Husbandry- Water Quality internships offer a well-rounded, educational experience working with our Biological Operations department.

Specialized internships are designed to provide valuable hands on experience in the care of specific animals and habitats at an AZA accredited, world class facility.

The water quality intern will be working with a team of biologists, researchers, technicians, engineers and educators dedicated to responsible husbandry practices and continued research. 
 

Tasks

  • Under supervision, operate and maintain water quality lab.
  • Help Identify innovative water conservation protocols.
  • Under supervision, Monitors laboratory supplies and replenishes within a define authority and budget.
  • Performs necropsy's and interprets results under Veterinarian supervision.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • The preferred intern candidate will be working towards a biology degree from an accredited University with concentration in chemistry, microbiology or marine science and will also be skilled or seeking experience in the following:
  • The use of ionalyzers, spectrophotometers and autochemistry systems.
  • Experience in water analysis and pathobiology.
     

Qualifications
 

• Must be a college sophomore or higher or up to 6 months post graduate with a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
• Must have the ability to work independently and be self-motivated as a dedicated and reliable team member.
• Must have strong communication skills with speaking with the general public is required.
• This position requires interns work in all weather conditions including heat, humidity, rain, cold and dust while indoors and outdoors. Interns will get wet and dirty.
• This position involves considerable physical exertion such as repetitive bending, pushing/pulling/carrying heavy loads, and regular lifting of heavy objects (up to 50 pounds).

Husbandry Wetlands Dome Internship


The Florida Aquarium Husbandry- Wetlands Dome internship offers a well-rounded, educational experience working with our DOME team in our Biological Operations department.

Specialized internships are designed to provide valuable hands on experience in the care of specific animals and habitats at an AZA accredited, world class facility.

Intern will be responsible for helping husbandry staff with the day to day feeding and care of animals in our Wetlands Dome at the Florida Aquarium. Tasks will include engaging guests daily about our animals, maintaining systems by performing cleaning and daily tasks, assisting biologists in projects, leaning and being able to prepare diets for wetlands animals, and handling animals in a safe and calm manner.

Qualifications

• Must be a college sophomore or higher or up to 6 months post graduate with a GPA of 2.5/4.0 or higher.

• Must be able to work in both a group and individual environment.
• Have a general understanding of working with different types of animals.
• Willingness to do physical labor on a daily basis in sometimes hot/cramped spaces.  

Spring and Fall Internships are 14 weeks in duration with a minimum of 16 hours per week requirement. Summer Internships are 10 weeks in duration with a minimum of 32 hours per week requirement. At least 1 project must be completed.

Horticulture internship

The Florida Aquarium Horticulture internship offers a well-rounded, educational experience working with our Horticulture team within our Biological Operations department.

Specialized internships are designed to provide valuable hands on experience in the care of specific animals and habitats at an AZA accredited, world class facility.

Intern will assist the Senior Horticulturist and Assistant Horticulturist with routine daily care and maintenance of the Florida Aquarium’s plant collection within the Wetlands Dome and the exterior of the property.

  • Aide Horticulture team in mangrove restoration projects in the Tampa Bay area.
  • Aide in opening the Wetlands: watering, pruning, detailed debris cleanup, providing browse and enrichment for the animals, and maintaining the health and appearance of all plants within the habitats.
  • Assist in maintaining the plant nursery and various needs around the property to include: watering plants, cleaning up debris, moving pots, planting plants and checking the overall appearance of the property.
