Marine operations internships are only available during summer term.
Position Summary
The Florida Aquarium Marine Operations internship offers individuals a behind-the-scenes look at an industry-leading Marine Operations department. Interns will also have the opportunity to experience diving in a variety of roles, including habitat maintenance, animal health dives and more. Learning from our Dive Safety Officer (DSO) and Assistance Dive Safety Officer (ADSO), interns will be exposed to the industry of Aquarium diving and the unique experience it offers to professional divers. Our dive interns will have the opportunity to gain knowledge, sea time and hands-on experience aboard our 72-foot Bay Spirit II catamaran.
Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
- Safely execute and support routine habitat and equipment maintenance, as needed
- Receive training on Aquarium open circuit diving, full face mask communications diving, tethered diving and hookah diving
- Safely support Wild Dolphin Cruises, port and education tours, events and charters
- Deliver extraordinary customer service to all Aquarium guests
- Incorporate the Aquarium’s conservation efforts and mission into daily activities
- Complete a Marine Operations project that will support the department or Aquarium
Qualifications:
- Must be able to complete swim test and skills circuit
- Must be college sophomore or higher with a GPA of 3.0 or higher OR up to six months post graduate
- Must be able to pass dive physical (cost is the responsibility of the intern)
- Current certification in First Aid, CPR and Oxygen Administration preferred
- Scuba certification by an internationally recognized agency (NAUI, PADI, SSI, etc.)
- Dive Master or above preferred
Time Commitment:
- Summer Internship term is 12 weeks with a minimum of 32 hours per week.
- At least 1 project must be completed.
