Animal Care & Health Internships

Animal Care & Health

The Florida Aquarium Animal Care & Health internships offer a well-rounded, educational experience working in a variety of areas. Internship opportunities may include assisting biologists with daily husbandry duties, daily food preparation and feeding, animal training and guest interactions.

All Animal Care & Health Internships

Qualifications:

  • Must be college sophomore or higher with a GPA of 3.0 or higher OR up to six months’ post graduate
  • Must be flexible and able to work in an ever-changing environment
  • Must be able to work both independently and as part of the team
  • Must be able to follow specific instructions while also being comfortable self-directing
  • Must have a general understanding of working with different types of animals
  • Strong communication skills are essential
  • Willingness to perform physical labor on a daily basis

Time Commitment:

  • Work days and times vary, depending on position, and may include early mornings and weekends.

Please Note: All Animal Care & Health internships are unpaid. Interns must make their own accommodation and transportation arrangements.

Fish and Invertebrates Internship

Position Summary

The Florida Aquarium fish and invertebrates (FINS) internship offers individuals the opportunity to work with our team of animal care professionals, primarily with our aquatic species.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Engage in fish, invertebrate and elasmobranch care and behavioral training techniques
  • Assisting our FINS team and Animal Health staff with daily responsibilities, including feeding, cleaning, record-keeping and animal observation
  • Participating in informal discussions about animal biology and natural history with visitors

 


Animal Ambassador Internship

Position Summary

The Florida Aquarium animal ambassador internships offer individuals the opportunity to work with our Animal Ambassador team. This team specializes in the care and health of the Aquarium’s ambassador animals including African penguins, ring-tailed lemurs, North American river otters, various birds of prey and small reptiles. Interns will have daily interactions with guests through formal public engagement on microphone. The Animal Ambassador team also utilizes various animal training techniques to benefit in the health-care routine of these animals.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Assisting biologists with daily duties and projects
  • Keeping habitats and backup areas clean
  • Feeding and diet prep
  • Participating in discussions about animal biology and natural history with visitors
  • Conducting microphone presentations focusing on the conservation of these animals

 


Wetlands Dome Internship

Position Summary

The Florida Aquarium wetlands dome internships offer individuals the opportunity to work with our Wetlands team and learn about the unique care provided to the animals within the habitat.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Maintaining systems by performing cleaning and daily tasks
  • Assisting biologists in various projects
  • Learning about and preparing diets for wetlands animals
  • Handling animals in a safe and calm manner
  • Engaging with guests daily about our animals

 


Quarantine Internship

Position Summary

The Florida Aquarium quarantine internships offer individuals the opportunity to work with our Quarantine team.

The Aquatic Quarantine intern will work primarily with species of fish and invertebrates; however, they must also be comfortable working with birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Learning quarantine protocols, medical treatments, water chemistry analysis, operation of both small- and large-scale aquatic systems and animal behavioral training
  • Assisting Quarantine and Animal Health staff with daily husbandry, including feeding, cleaning, record keeping and animal observation
