The Florida Aquarium has launched a brand new program called Shark Swim that allows guests to become immersed in the Coral Reef Gallery, home to their massive Sand Tiger Sharks, sea turtle, barracudas, eels, stingrays and over 1,600 fish – all without being SCUBA certified!
1/20/2015 The USS Narcissus named 12th State Underwater Archeological Preserve in Unique Underwater Dedication Ceremony
The Florida Aquarium, Florida Department of State and the South Eastern Archeological Preserve held a unique dedication ceremony for the USS Narcissus Civil War Ship honoring it as 12th State Underwater Archeological Preserve. The ceremony featured comments by Aquarium president Thom Stork and Florida State Secretary Ken Detzner as well as an underwater dedication where guests could see and communicate with Aquarium SCUBA divers as they unveiled the monument.
11/25/2014 The Florida Aquarium Cares for Cold Stunned Sea Turtles from the Northeast
The Florida Aquarium is now caring for 10 cold stunned Kemp’s Ridleys Sea Turtles that arrived from the northeast via Coast Guard plane earlier today.
As a result of abrupt temperature change, sea turtle cold-stunning has overwhelm organizations in the northeast with the ability to care for these animals and has reached out to other organizations, including The Florida Aquarium, to help in this rescue effort. Sea turtles cannot regulate their body temperatures and thus can quickly become hypothermic, unable to move, and will wash ashore.
The Florida Aquarium team, along with other organizations in the state, will meet the Coast Guard plane in Orlando tomorrow afternoon with an ETA of 1:30-2:00PM. The team will then transport 10 Kemp’s Ridley’s back to The Florida Aquarium in Tampa for care.
3/2/2015 The Florida Aquarium Splashes into its 20th Anniversary
The Florida Aquarium kicks off its 20th Anniversary with a splash...literally! The Aquarium’s Anniversary is on March 31st but starting the second week in March (March 9th) through the end of August, the Aquarium will be honoring its history with fun celebrations throughout the exhibits including a 20th Anniversary themed scavenger hunt and a celebration station filled with fun crafts and Aquarium memorabilia. Guest can also meet some of the Aquarium’s Animal Ambassadors throughout the exhibit paths, many of whom were orphaned or injured in the wild and given a second chance thanks to the their longstanding rescue and rehabilitation programs.
In addition, the Aquarium has launched a new show as part of their 20th Anniversary. The interactive show called Secret Sea Life Superhero features real life ocean superheroes and immerses guests into a high-energy and fun-filled audience participation show where guests will learn more about the amazing sea life that calls our oceans home.
All the 20th Anniversary activities are included in the cost of admission and guests can join the fun on social media by using #FLAQturns20.

The Florida Aquarium’s resident octopuses showed their support for the Tampa Bay Lightning in this fun video which is a twist on the Detroit Red Wings “Legend of the Octopus”.
