Education- Community Engagement Intern

During this internship you will hone communication and interpretation skills by learning how to develop and facilitate programming designed to engage the community in the mission, vision, and values of The Florida Aquarium.

Responsible for the instruction of educational public programs focusing on Florida and worldwide ecosystems and their conservation messages at off-site community events throughout the semester.  Ensures that all programming presented is engaging, innovative and effective, as determined by evaluation, and in direct support of the mission of The Florida Aquarium.

Internship requirements include:
 
• Working towards a bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology, Biology, Education, Environmental Science, Communication, Interpretation or related discipline (Associates degree working towards Bachelor’s accepted also) or just graduated
• Teaching and/or public speaking experience preferred
• Standing (up to 6 hours per day)
• Walking (6 hours per day)
• Carrying up to 50 lbs — OccasionallyL
• Lifting up to 50 lbs — Occasionally
• More than normal talking
• Public Speaking, Hosting and Costume Performance
• Some contact with a living collection of plants and animals in a central Florida climate
• Flexibility in working Saturdays and evenings
• Flexibility in working holidays
• Ability to interact with and be around animals
• Ability to work outdoors for extended lengths of time
• Exposure to marked changes in temperature and humidity
• Exposure to salt water

Interns schedule requires Saturdays 9:00am-5:00pm. Friday OR Sunday 9:00am-5:00pm most ideal for 2nd day per week, but flexible. Event days and times vary, flexibility to attend as many as possible is requested to allow for the best experience. Ability to provide their own transportation when necessary required.


Fall interns will all start Sunday September 17th

Internship is 12 weeks in duration in which at least 1 project must be completed. A minimum of 16 hours per week is required.
