Position Title:            Landscape Assistant (Part Time)
Service Group:          Biological Operations
Reports To:                Senior Horticulturist
Exemption Status:    Hourly 

Position Summary
Responsible for working as a team in the installation and maintenance of a botanical collection of Florida native species in naturalistic habitats using environmentally responsible husbandry practices in indoor and outdoor exhibits.  Performs general lawn, landscape, and nursery maintenance.  Supports senior horticulturist in achieving goals.  Weekend availability required.

Essential Position Functions
  • Performs the highest level of bontanical services to include weeding, pruning, spraying, and basic irrigation maintenance of numerous potted plants
  • Maintains tools and equipment necessary for the care of the botanical collection
  • Follows environmentally responsible practices which reflect concern for the botanical collection
  • Delivers extraordinary customer service to all aquarium guests and internal customers

Secondary Functions
  • Assists with care of conservatory-style interior environments, exterior exhibit landscaping and the botanical nursery
  • Assists with opening the wetlands gallery in the morning
  • Provide clean-up of plant / tree debris / limbs etc. during planting and maintenance projects, including putting away, cleaning / organizing tools and equipment 

Education Requirements and Technical Skills
  • Minimum high school diploma or GED. 
  • Valid FL Drivers License
  • Experience working in landscape maintenance; some knowledge of Florida native species preferred.
  • Knowledge of common plant pests and disorders and is able to control them using approved techniques and safety precautions
  • Ability to use, adjust, clean and service landscaping tools and equipment
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain power equipment such as pole saws, sprayers, trimmers, leaf blowers, etc.
  • Knowledge of basic plant maintenance, including watering, fertilizing, and pruning
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time watering numerous potted plants
  • Master Gardner skills prefered
