Communications Manager

Position Title:             Communications Manager

Position Summary
The Communications Manager is responsible for managing all publicity efforts including:  media relations, social media initiatives and public affairs coordination for The Florida Aquarium.  Creates and executes a communications plan designed to increase awareness of and support for the Aquarium’s Vision and Mission, thereby strengthening the Aquarium’s branded image and generating attendance.  Responsible for the day-to-day department management, including:  budgeting, workflows, evaluation and assessment of deadlines, regular communication with other department managers, issues management, writing and editing of key communications materials. This position also integrates publicity and social media plans with other marketing functions including advertising, promotions, sales and membership.

Essential Position Functions
  • Develops and implements all publicity plans targeting traditional, online and social media utilizing interdepartmental relationships to create Mission-focused strategies
  • Establishes and maintains favorable and productive relationships with local, regional and national media
  • Travels to conservation field sites to orchestrate publicity events
  • Manages the workflow and activities of the digital media specialist who oversees social media programs including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, SnapChat and YouTube channels
  • Collaborates on public affairs programs and assists with government relations as needed
  • Provides input on issues management to the Chief Operating Officer and the Leadership Team
  • Proactively creates crisis communication plans and talking points
  • Assists with developing and maintaining website content
  • Oversees the creation and maintenance of photo and video libraries
  • Responsible for the maintenance and oversight of communications budget
  • Maintains up-to-date lists of media contacts
  • Proactively works with FLAQ leadership and staff to identify and develop relevant newsworthy stories capturing all aspects of the Aquarium’s Mission
  • Conducts and supervises tours for writers, journalists and visiting media
  • Maintains contact with the public relations department of destination marketing agencies to ensure appropriate exposure for the Aquarium and its events
  • Ensures all listings in community and tourist publications and calendars are updated with Aquarium events, promotions and other relevant activities
  • Maintains relations with trade press to promote the Aquarium’s Mission and Vision
  • Develops contacts and networks with other communications professionals in the community
  • Plays an active part in appropriate professional industry organizations and travels to meetings when necessary
  • Writes articles for Watercolors newsletter, press releases, e-blasts, brochures, press kits, fact sheets and invitations Delivers extraordinary customer service to all Aquarium guests and internal customers
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor
Education Requirement
  • Four-year degree in marketing, public relations, journalism, communications or English
  • Minimum three years Communications experience; experience in similar industry (aquarium/zoo, attraction, hospitality) preferred.

  • Established Tampa Bay background and contacts with media preferred
  • Technical knowledge of printing, electronic media, graphics
  • Experience with photography and /or videography a plus
  • Good functional knowledge of computer graphics and word processing software
  • Interest in wildlife, conservation and marine environmental issues
